Rock ‘n’ roll is like any other industry or field: It’s competitive and fierce, and participants often harbor resentment toward fellow musicians. This notion and attitude is especially true when a given band and musician is the rightful owner of a certain genre or scene. When it comes to rock ‘n’ roll, Freddie Mercury and Queen are one of the undisputed owners of the genre.Hence, it seems a lot of musicians were either envious of them or straight up just didn’t like their disposition. To dislike another musician is human nature. As shallow as it might be, it’s frankly, a positive thing. Positive in the sense that it drives musicians to create better music. Nevertheless, these three musicians weren’t fans of Freddie Mercury and Queen for their own reasons, and they range across the spectrum quite drastically.

Steve Walsh of Kansas
Steve Walsh of Kansas has always been a bit reluctant to praise his musical peers. However, instead of speculating why that is, here is a direct quote from the man articulating his dislike of Freddie Mercury. Walsh stated, “Freddie was a complete a—,” but “The rest of the guys were great…gay, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but great,” per Queen Concerts.

Well, that is quite the statement to unpack, to say the least. Walsh’s answer regarding Mercury is still unclear. Regardless, Walsh put it all out there and didn’t keep his cards close to his chest whatsoever.

The Cure’s Robert Smith
Robert Smith and The Cure were one of the biggest British bands of the ’80s, but their legacy and quality never surpassed the one and only Queen. Thus, it could possibly be surmised that Smith’s dislike for Queen might have come from a place of envy. Respectfully so, as it’d be hard sharing the limelight with the one and only.Regarding his perspective, Smith told Rolling Stone, “Well, I never liked Queen” and “I can honestly say I hated Queen and everything that they did.” Smith clearly did not hold back in his hatred towards Queen, but why exactly is still unclear to this day.

Liam Gallagher of Oasis
Liam Gallagher is about as snarky and critical as a human being can get, and people love and hate him for it. That being so, when the late Foo Fighter drummer Taylor Hawkins asked Gallagher about his thoughts on Queen in Magnet Magazine, Gallagher hilariously did not hold back. Dislike aside, Gallagher’s comments are hilariously on brand.Gallagher told Hawkins, “I get Freddie Mercury has a great voice and all that, and obviously they’ve got some great songs. But I do find them a bit Queen-y.” “Brian May’s guitar sound sounds like he’s got it clogged in his a—,” added Gallagher.
